Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
