India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Haze Following Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" range.
Extremely High Pollution Levels
Various sections of Delhi showed an AQI above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe limit set by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times above healthy limits.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous haze that covers the city as winter approaches.
Nevertheless in recent months, the newly elected city government petitioned the highest court to seek a relaxation of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Ruling and Implementation
To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated periods throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Several air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded pollution spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Regional Effects
Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to declining pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from India following the celebrations.
Chronic Pollution Problem
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as colder air descends.
Public Health and Financial Toll
Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k untimely mortalities per year in the capital.
