Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Dutch Creation Which Shaped the Modern World
There are many contenders to claim the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, building a modest merchant vessel required around ten lumberjacks laboring for three months,” notes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”
Thanks to their rapid automated cutter, that converted logs to planks using virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch naval, financial as well as artistic dominance across the continent and the world.
The Original True Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends the writer, represented “humanity’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component transformed its circular motion into up-and-down action for the saw. Another component changed the spinning movement into a lateral motion feeding the timber to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment per stroke.
“Every component seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate these parts in order that they acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each downward motion and advancing on every upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental components.”

A “guide”, which is a tube or housing through which one of the bars can slide snugly. (Assume you can put things on a stand, so the components do not fall down.)
