Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Manchester City Speculation as Pure Gossip

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".

The Italian manager, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the persistent rumours about his future.

Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in June 2024, is under contract that runs until 2029, with a possible extension available.

"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."

He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."

Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime kick-off.

Strain Following Recent Remarks

Maresca's latest statement come after he referred to a previous two-day spell as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.

Those original remarks had fueled widespread talk of a potential disagreement between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.

When pressed if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton press conference, no."

The manager however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to keep backing the team".

In more positive news, Maresca revealed that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, potentially in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa later this month.

Perspective: An 'Open Wound'

The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that continues to cause concern.

While there has been no deepening of the situation in the open, there has also been no apology forthcoming, leaving the matter unresolved.

The mood during the manager's media briefings has become notably strained, leading to fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the season.

Chelsea's on-field position is strong: they are fourth in the league, have reached the Carabao Cup last four, and can achieve a better European draw with good performances in their remaining games.
